2008 Stumptown Comics Fest

Jessie & Andy

A hearty thank you to Jessie Grace and Andy (pictured above) for putting me up in Portland for the 2008 Stumptown Comics Fest. (You really ought to check out Andy’s righteous folk rock band Bark Hide and Horn!) Thanks also to Cal Wong and Hellen Jo for the continual inspiration and letting me tag along.

A Spaceship, a dragon, and an inflatable crown

Virgle

Sure, the hours are long, but I’ve had the good fortune to have some fun assignments at work recently, including an illustration for Project Virgle and homepage logos for the UK and the Netherlands.

Gomance: My First Kiss

Gomance

Please enjoy this new two-page comic for the upcoming Electric Ant Zine. Pretty much a true story.

Thing-a-day 2008 Highlights

Thing-a-day Highlights
As attentive readers know, every day in February I traded sleep for a new drawing on the 2008 thing-a-day blog along the likes of fellow comic nerds Ryan Sands, Hellen Jo, and Calvin Wong. Above are some highlights. Check out the my thing-a-day posts to see the whole mess.

A New York Story from Our Friend Dave

Dave Rodich in the NY Press

Check out this nice slice-of-NYC-life story in the NY Press by longtime Germart friend & associate Dave Rodich.

Fish Heads at SJE Circa 1985

Ryan absconded this classic VHS tape from our mom’s crawl space. But when I popped it into the VCR (remember those?), I discovered that the tape was broken. But with a screwdriver, some scotch tape, and some McGyver-esque ingenuity, I was able to salvage it.

This is a recording of Logan, Ryan, and I performing a routine to Fish Heads by Barnes and Barnes at the 1985 St. John Ev. school talent show (choreographed by our parents). I recall the audience being pretty perplexed. Some have said that this explains a lot. . .

Ryan(s) on Thing-a-day

Ryan on thing-a-day

I’ll be posting drawings up on thing-a-day.com all week. C’mon by and check it out! Many other rad folks are contributing too, including another Ryan, who’s writes the wonderful manga blog Same Hat, and a bay-area cartoonist favorite, hellllllen, who seems to spell her name with a variable amount of “L’s”, as is evidenced on helllllen.org.

Topless Germicks circa 1995

Topless Germicks circa 1995This is one of the last photos of all the Germick kids in the house where we grew up in St. John, IN. The picture pretty much says it all. If I remember correctly, it was orchestrated by Ryan who unsuccessfully tried to convince Des to take her top off too. From left to right (Dylan, Nathan, Ryan, Desiree, and Logan).Disclaimer: Some aspects of this photo may have been intentionally exaggerated for dramatic effect

Random Inspiration: The Congos of Catan

Heart of the Congos

Every once in a while, a good shufflin’ on the ol’ iPod will uncover some forgotten treasures. One such occasion took place this past weekend while some comrades and I were sat down for a game of The Settler’s of Catan. As I was in the midst of this heroic conquest of commerce and diplomacy, the sweet trance-inducing sounds of The Congos came wafting from the speakers. There’s not much to be said about the Lee Perry produced dub masterpiece that hasn’t already been said. But the next time you find yourself desperate for a Mineral and one of your “friends” won’t trade with you because they know you’re going to win and you are forced to helplessly watch as sweet victory gets ripped right out of your hands, put this on and imagine the island of Catan as a psychedelic paradise filled with mystery and intrigue, not a soul crushing pit of treachery and despair.
